The New iMac Air
iMac Air

HOT off the presses... Apple's biggest hardware announcement at the Macworld Expo is a new laptop called the iMac Air. This is a very cool looking ultra portable laptop. It's a super thin 3lb machine with a full keyboard and a relatively large 13.3" LED backlit display. At first glance, I was "WOWED" but after careful review, I'm not sure the average user can live with the limitations of Apple's new laptop. The biggest omission is the lack of an internal Optical Drive (DVD/CD). Apple's reasoning is that most users will use Wi-Fi and the Internet to get content (it doesn't even have an ethernet port so it's Wi-Fi or nothing). I guess they want users to use iTunes' new Movie Rental option to download movies prior to a plane trip instead of taking a few DVDs with you. To me this is a fatal flaw for what otherwise is a very nice looking laptop. I've owned many, many  laptops, including ultra portables without built-in optical drives. In every case, inevitably I've cursed the fact that I need to carry an external drive. It's just too limiting to not have the option to pop a CD or DVD into your laptop.

Dell XPS M1330

The new Dell XPS M1330 at just over 4 pounds offers the same 13.3 LCD backlit screen, a DVD Burner and a 160 Gig hard drive (twice the size of Apple's). That's another issue I have with the iMac Air, the hard drive is only 80 Gig. That's small by today's standards but it's especially small when you consider that you'll have to store all of your music and movies on its hard drive because it lacks an Optical Drive.

My recommendation; if you want Apple's best ultra light mobile computer, skip the iMac Air, get the iPhone. If you want a laptop, look at other options.

Dear BJ,

Happy New Year!

For those of us in the Technology world, each New Year brings wonderful new tech "toys". As I write this, the CES (Consumer Electronic Show) in Las Vegas has just come to an end and Macworld Expo in San Francisco is just beginning. I love this time of year!

Over the coming weeks and months we'll all get to read about what was HOT and what was NOT at these shows. My favorite part of my job is researching and testing new technology so I'll be wading through the mounds and mounds of reviews to see which of these new technologies will be beneficial to my clients. When I find something great, I'll include it in this newsletter.

What's your favorite tech gadget or software title? Let me know so I can share it with the rest of our readers.

Here's to a healthy and happy 2008!

Want to make XP Cooler than Vista?

Yahoo Widget 2

One of the coolest features of Windows Vista is the new "Sidebar". This allows the user to add "Gadgets" (the Microsoft name for the industry standard term Widgets). Widgets are tiny little programs that put all kinds of information on your desktop. Fortunately you can get a nifty tool called Yahoo! Widgets for Windows XP which adds Vista's Sidebar capability and actually surpasses it in quality and capability.

Yahoo! Widgets is an updated version of Konfabulator. Konfabulator is the original software tool that brought Widgets to Windows (the Apple Mac has had them for years). Yahoo! purchased the company a couple of years ago and has been regularly updating the software ever since. This is a boon for users because each updated version has made improvements in speed and stability.

So what will these Widgets do for me, you ask? With over 4,000 Widgets to choose from it's hard to imagine what they can't do for you. For instance I use the Weather, Date, Stock and Clock Widgets. The Weather Widget alone is worth taking the time to install the program. I have all my favorite locations setup up so in a single click I can see the current weather and 5 day forecast for Philly, Steamboat Springs and Cape Cod just to name a few. There are other Widget add-on competitors including Google's Desktop Gadgets but I prefer Yahoo! Widgets. And the best part - the program is free and the Widgets display without any ads. To get started just follow this link: http://widgets.yahoo.com/

Enjoy!

Dell XPS One
Dell XPS OneLast month I mentioned that Dell had released a true competitor to Apple's iMac. Since then I had a chance to work with the Dell XPS One. First the bad news... The unit I received was sent without the required installation image. This meant that I had to install the OS, Drivers and Software from scratch using the included CDs. This was a major pain in the butt! I'm sure this problem was a result of a combination of the holiday purchasing frenzy and the fact that this unit had just been released a couple of weeks prior to my purchase. Dell is normally very good when it comes to easy initial setup.

The good news is that everything installed smoothly and once I had it up and running it was a pleasure to work with. It's a beautifully designed All-in-one. PC Magazine actually gave it there Editor's Choice over the new 20" iMac. I highly recommend this for anyone who's considering an iMac but would like to stay with Windows. I expect Dell will release a 24" version to compete with the 24" iMac sometime this year.
